World Language Department
Our mission is to develop proficiency in a second language, enhance interdisciplinary literacy and to promote understanding and appreciation for cultural diversity. Our vision is to see students graduate with a real life global, marketable skill with an understanding and appreciation for the people who are a part of our culturally diverse world. Our World Language teachers are experienced and dedicated to providing the best quality lessons and practice possible.
A brief summary of our veteran Spanish teachers: Leif Atkisson lived and studied throughout Mexico and Central America; Martha Stickles lived and studied in Mexico; Matt Hovendon lived and studied in South America.
We have a new teacher for Spanish this year: Jessica Ortega is a North County local. She grew in a bilingual and bicultural community. She has traveled extensively throughout Mexico and spent several years in Colombia. We are very fortunate to have Mrs. Ortega as our newest Pirate. ¡Bienvenida! Once a Pirate, Always a Pirate.
Our American Sign Language teachers: Nicole Gonet holds a Bachelors Degree in Adolescent America Sign Language Education/Special Education from Keuka College, New York. She has 8+ years teaching experience as well as experience working in the deaf community. Elizabeth Butler-Arreola has a degree from San Francisco State University, a certificate in Interpreting ASL/English and a Masters Degree from the University of Phoenix. She has been a member of the Deaf community for over 30 years.
