A Letter To Prospective NHS Members

TO:             NHS Applicant and Prospective Member

FROM:      The National Honor Society Membership Committee

RE:              Application Requirements & Process

Thank you for your interest in the Oceanside High School chapter of the National Honor Society.  When the National Honor Society was founded in 1921, it was with the hope of creating an organization that would recognize and encourage academic achievement while also developing other characteristics essential to citizens in a democracy.  These ideals of scholarship, character, service and leadership remain as relevant today as they were in 1921.  Now more than 75 years later, the National Honor Society has become a prestigious organization, ranking high among administrators, faculty members, students, parents, and residents of the school community.  Its reputation for excellence is the result of years of commitment on the part of everyone involved.  Through NHS chapter service activities, members maintain and extend the qualities that won them selection.  Membership is both an honor and a commitment.

The application process is designed for efficiency and impartiality.  Qualifications require you to have a 3.50 G.P.A, to submit a letter of application, a completed Student Activity Information Form, and a recommendation from a teacher at OHS.   You should also include a copy of your transcript.   For the 2020-2021 school year we have moved to a digital document that includes all parts of the application, except the teacher recommendation.

Your letter of application must discuss the specific evidence and activities that demonstrate how you embody the four strengths required of NHS membership: Scholarship, Leadership, Service, and Character.  You might consider why/how your past activities qualify you for membership and how you plan to contribute to NHS.  It must be in 12 pt. font and double-spaced.   Applying seniors also need to address why they waited until their final year of high school to apply.

You must also attend a short tutorial with current NHS students at lunch on one of the dates listed on the Google Classroom. Please sign up beforehand, and log in to the Zoom using your first name and last name, so you are let into the zoom meeting. This short meeting is to ensure you submit an application which will put you in the best light.

Once again, thank you for your interest in the National Honor Society.
