OUSD Employees of the Year 2020-21

Oceanside Unified School District is proud to announce our 2020-21 Teachers and Classified Employees of the Year! Each year, the district accepts nominations and selects two teachers and two classified non-teaching employees who go above and beyond in their roles. Congratulations to the following outstanding educators and leaders in our community. You can read their reasons for nomination below:

Teachers of the Year:

Alyssa Schrom, 4th Grade Teacher at Del Rio Elementary, 8 years teaching

Schrom is a known advocate for all her students. She builds relationships to positively impact student learning, has a contagious enthusiasm, and continues to develop her powerful instructional strategies. She is a go-to person for her staff and goes above and beyond to support the Del Rio community. Schrom will go on as a finalist for San Diego County’s teacher of the year. 

Xye Sanders, 7/8th Grade Education Specialist at Chavez Middle, 19 years teaching

Sanders believes that all students can achieve, and helps them build upon their unique learning styles. She is intentional in engaging parents and helps fellow staff meet student needs through the IEP process. She goes out of her way to lead extracurricular activities, and is an overall leader and unifier among her community. Sanders will go on as a finalist for San Diego County’s teacher of the year. 

Classified Employees of the Year:

Regina Basaanes, Special Education Paraprofessional at Foussat Elementary, 8.5 years in OUSD

Basanes is one of the MVPs of Foussat Elementary, who cares for all students across the campus. She freely gives of her time to interact with students and support the school in various ways, including making an annual motivational bulletin board, with this year’s theme being, “Tough times don’t last - tough teams do!” Basanes will go on as a finalist for San Diego County’s classified employee of the year. 

Allen Sanders, Lead Day Custodian at Oceanside High School, 30 years in OUSD

Allen Sanders is known as a “pillar of Oceanside High.” He is devoted to all aspects of his work and demonstrates a leadership style that makes others want to work alongside him. He is warm, kind, and dear to all on the OHS campus.
