State Seal of Biliteracy
The California SSB (Ed. Code SEction 51461(a), is awarded to high school seniors who attain a high level of proficiency in 2 or more languages. The criteria for this award are noted here:
English (all 3 are required)
1. Completion of all required ELA courses for graduation, with an overall GPA of 2.0 or higher in those courses.
2. SBAC ELA Standard Met or higher (this was waived for Class of 2021)
3. Demonstrated proficiency in a language other than English through one of the following:
a) Score of 3 or higher on AP Exam
b) Score of 4 or higher on IB Exam
c) Completion of high school World Language courses through Year-4, with overall GPA of 3.0 or higher in those courses.
d) Earn a passing score equivalent to 3.0 on a state approved alternative exam requiring demonstrated mastery of speaking, reading & writing at the level of
Year-4.
e) Score 600 or higher on SAT-2 World Language Exam
In addition, students whose primary language is not English must also demonstrate proficiency in their primary language as measured by the ELPAC or CELD-T Exam.
