Developmental Psychology / Child Development

Mission Statement

Developmental Psychology of Children, formerly known as Child Development, is offered as a one or two year program.  We study the physical, social-emotional, and intellectual development of children from birth to age 12.  We have an in depth unit on reproductive health and prenatal development.  Most recently we have had the opportunity to participate in the Baby Think It Over program, which enables students to bring home a baby for the weekend in a simulation that is based on the care of a real baby.  That means they cry!

The second year of Developmental Psychology is geared towards Early Childhood Education.  Second year students intern at local preschools and Child Development centers.  Upon successful completion of the program, these students can enter the field of Early Childhood Education as an Assistant Preschool Teacher.  This class is articulated with Mira Costa College and interns can earn up to 4 college credits, dependent on the hours of internship.

Perhaps most importantly students in these classes prepare themselves for the most important career of a lifetime, that of being a mom or a dad.
